The Theme Tune

   Every morning in assembly, which was conducted with full pomp and circumstance, the headmaster and the prefect of the day (who read the lesson) walked onto the stage from the back of hall by the reception area, with Buzzer in front and the prefect a deferential distance behind.  This walk was accompanied by suitable music, usually organ music, which was played through the speaker system in the hall from a very large reel-to-reel tape recorder.  I remember this well, as it was often me that played it (the tape, not the organ).  On the last day, it was always the head girl who read the lesson.  On the final day of term in July 1965, I was told that they would not have recorded music that day, the music would be played on the piano by one of the staff (someone had tried to play the Wedding March the previous year).  I was therefore in the hall with everyone else, when two people with a sense of fun, and who had crept behind the scenes, played Goodbyee, by Pete & Dud (Derek & Clive).  A very fitting tune for that day when we were all looking forward to our great escape.  The hall was in uproar, but Buzzer was not amused.  By the look on his face, his blood pressure had risen dramatically, although nothing other than his temper burst.  His retribution afterwards was harsh.
