Some 40 years later, I returned to
Morecambe. The Cobblers were playing there and I used it as an excuse to
go back and relive a few memories.
I was not let down by the weather as it was raining yet again.
However, I was not as wet as when I arrived in Morecambe back in 1968.
Then I had travelled, over 14 hours from Northampton, on the back of
Brian Richardson’s motor scooter.
I wanted to see Marineland, the old railway station and Moby Dick. The
train arrived at a halt some quarter of a mile from the front. So where
was the old station? Back in 1968, I am sure I saw a steam train as we
walked along the esplanade. Walking towards the front I did find the
old station building, so my mind was not playing tricks on me. Today it
is the Tourist Information Centre, the Platform Concert Hall, a public
house and a Wacky Warehouse.
However, I did not have a clue where Marineland would have been and Moby
Dick was long gone. Marineland, I believe closed in the 1990s and Moby
Dick was destroyed by a fire in 1972.
So that was Morecambe and, yes, there was some sunshine. The Eric
Morecambe statue and the result at Christie Park made me feel warmer and
prepared me for the return journey.
I’m glad I went. The photo gallery below shows another 10 photos from
my visit, including some at the Cobblers' match. Bill doesn't mention
the score, but the Cobblers won 4-2.
